Scientists Have Discovered A New Organ In The Human Body

This whole story is mind-blowing for two reasons. One because of the potential health benefits and two because we were pretty confident we had the human anatomy figured out.

The interstitium is fluid-filled compartments found in connective tissues all around the body – beneath the gut, lungs, blood vessels and muscles.

The findings were published in a Scientific Reports journal. Previously it was thought this space was a dense ‘wall’ of collagen, however, the new discovery finds “a previously unappreciated fluid-filled interstitial space”.

Scientists explained that the spaces were discovered thanks to advances in microscopy. And that they previously hadn’t shown up on microscopic slides as the slide-making process made the cavities disappear.

Whilst it’s still very early days, early assumptions suggest that the ‘organ’ acts as a shock absorber.

The discovery could have huge implications for medical research. The fluid within the interstitium could potentially explain why cancer tumors invading this layer of tissue spread to the lymph nodes.

The whole discovery is utterly mind-blowing and could completely blow open the way we look at the human body and how to treat it.
